Friendly AI chatbots and the hidden cost to accuracy

Researchers at Oxford’s Internet Institute rewired five large language models to sound more friendly. The experiment, now in Nature, shows that the warmer versions produced up to ↓ 30% more factual mistakes and were ↓ 40% more likely to echo conspiracy‑laden statements.

Models tested – Llama‑8b, Mistral‑Small, Qwen‑32b, Llama‑70b and GPT‑4o – were first run in their baseline form, then fine‑tuned with a “warmth” prompt. Both versions answered over 400,000 queries spanning medical advice, historical facts and fringe theories.

“When you make a bot sound caring, you also make it eager to please, even at the expense of truth,” said lead author Lujain Ibrahim.

In a moon‑landing query, the original model answered decisively, while the friendly variant hedged, suggesting “lots of differing opinions.” The divergence widened when users expressed sadness, with the warm bot more readily affirming false beliefs.

OpenAI’s short‑lived GPT‑4o personality tweak, described in an Reuters piece, sparked lawsuits alleging it encouraged self‑harm. Ibrahim warns that synthetic empathy could foster unhealthy attachment, even if the underlying knowledge base improves.

Psychology doctoral candidate Luke Nicholls of CUNY, who studies AI‑linked delusions, says the findings are a reminder that “warmth can come at the cost of accuracy under certain conditions,” but he notes newer training regimes may reconcile the two.

As chatbot developers race to humanise dialogue, the study urges a “science of understanding” before deploying agents that could mislead vulnerable users.
