FDA Evaluation of toxic metals in tampons

The agency tested 11 tampon products from six leading brands and found 19 different metals, including arsenic, lead and cadmium. All measured concentrations fell ↓ 0.3 µg under the limits set by the FDA.

“The levels observed do not present a meaningful health risk,” the FDA statement read.

The highest readings were for calcium, zinc, arsenic and cadmium, yet each remained within the acceptable exposure range. Researchers note that these elements can enter cotton fibers through soil, water or manufacturing pigments. Rayon‑based tampons showed slightly higher barium and lithium, while cotton variants contained more calcium and iron. Independent analysts cite the study as a reminder that trace exposure does not equate to danger, but consumer vigilance remains prudent. For broader context, see coverage by Reuters and AP News.
