Employers, Not AI, Fuel the AI Talent Shortage

After a decade of matching tech firms with African talent and now leading the International Youth Foundation, I have reached a stark conclusion: the AI talent shortage is largely self‑inflicted.

Why the AI talent shortage persists

Only ↓ 22% of CEOs believe today’s entry‑level workers are fully ready, while ↓ 60% cite skills gaps as a top barrier to digital transformation. Over the past twenty years, many firms have trimmed internal training, raised credential thresholds, and shifted workforce development to schools, governments and NGOs.

“We can’t blame AI for a pipeline that we stopped feeding,” says Christina Sass, CEO of IYF.

Yet the market’s reality is that a workforce capable of collaborating with advanced tools remains scarce. Recent analyses from Reuters estimate global demand for AI expertise outstrips supply by more than three to one.

Scaling skill‑building at the source

In Mexico, IYF teamed with Google.org to launch InteligencIA, a ten‑hour, mobile‑first course that teaches practical AI concepts to youth and local officials. More than 15,000 participants have completed the program, with a 76% finish rate and women representing half of the cohort. The goal is to reach 60,000 learners by 2027.

Corporate giants are following suit. In 2024 IKEA announced plans to deliver AI literacy training to its entire 165,000‑person workforce, proving that upskilling is becoming a baseline expectation rather than a charitable add‑on.

The lesson is clear: skill gaps are a structural constraint, not a charitable afterthought. Companies that embed training into their core operations will have teams ready to leverage AI, while competitors continue to lament a non‑existent pipeline.

Even the pandemic taught firms that resilience hinges on adaptable talent, reinforcing the urgency to act now.
