Ebola outbreak triggers WHO emergency alert

World Health Organization officials announced Sunday that the rapidly spreading Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and neighboring Uganda has been classified as a public health emergency of international concern.

The virus, identified as the Bundibugyo strain, has already claimed ↓ 88 lives and left ↓ 300 suspected cases in the region, according to local health ministries.

How the virus moved across borders

Initial cases emerged in the mining town of Mongwalu, Ituri province, before travelers carried the disease to North Kivu, Kinshasa, and across the porous frontier into Uganda, where two laboratory‑confirmed infections were linked to Congolese passengers, one of them fatal in Kampala.

Health workers report that armed groups such as M23 and the Allied Democratic Forces have hampered contact‑tracing efforts, forcing responders to operate under fire.

“The speed of transmission across multiple health zones and now across the border is extremely concerning,” said Trish Newport, emergency program manager for Doctors Without Borders.

WHO Director‑General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that the true scale of the crisis remains uncertain, noting early diagnostic kits only detected the Zaire strain, delaying confirmation of the Bundibugyo variant.

International partners are urged to boost surveillance, isolate cases, and monitor contacts for a 21‑day period while keeping borders open to avoid driving infections underground.
