Health officials in the Democratic Republic of the Congo say the Ebola outbreak DRC is showing signs of genetic change as confirmed infections have climbed to ↓ 4,000 cases.

Ebola outbreak DRC: mutation risk intensifies

The African Centres for Disease Control, the continent’s disease watchdog, announced a full‑scale escalation, pledging door‑to‑door surveillance in affected provinces.

“We can no longer rely on passive reporting,” a senior CDC spokesperson told Reuters.

Laboratory data suggest the virus’s glycoprotein is acquiring mutations that could affect vaccine efficacy, prompting the World Health Organization to fast‑track a review of existing immunisation protocols.

Local health teams are being equipped with rapid‑test kits, and vaccination campaigns are being widened to include contacts of newly identified patients. The AP News reports that community leaders are being enlisted to encourage reporting and reduce stigma.

Experts warn that if the virus continues to evolve, containment could become more costly and time‑consuming, underscoring the urgency of the new aggressive strategy.
