Ebola outbreak DRC: scope and response

On May 15 the Africa Centres for Disease Control confirmed a fresh Ebola outbreak DRC in Ituri province, reporting ↓ 65 deaths and ↓ 246 suspected cases among hundreds of patients.

Laboratory analysis verified the pathogen as an Ebola virus, but preliminary sequencing points to a non‑Zaire strain, for which the existing vaccines offer no protection.

“Rapid regional coordination is essential,” warned Dr. Jean Kaseya, Director‑General of Africa CDC.

The province, rich in mineral resources and bordering South Sudan and Uganda, faces compounded challenges: porous borders, mobile populations, and lingering insecurity. Africa CDC has summoned an emergency summit of local authorities, NGOs and WHO to tighten surveillance and mobilise resources.

Experts at Reuters note that if the case count holds, this would rank as the second‑largest outbreak caused by a non‑Zaire Ebola lineage, highlighting the difficulty of containment without a tailored vaccine.

The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovation pledged to stand ready to accelerate research, clinical trials and potential therapeutic development. With the last DRC Ebola flare‑up declared over only five months ago, health officials stress that vigilance must remain high.
