Ebola death rate spikes to ↓ 30‑50% as WHO chief lands in DRC

World Health Organization officials announced the Ebola death rate now sits between ↓ 30% and ↓ 50% among confirmed cases, a stark rise that could claim up to five lives per ten infections.

Urgent call for cease‑fire

TEDROS ADHANOM GHEBREYESUS, WHO director‑general, arrived in Kinshasa urging armed factions to honor a temporary cease‑fire, warning that continued fighting will fuel preventable fatalities.

“If hostilities persist, we lose the chance to vaccinate, treat and contain,” the WHO’s high‑threat pathogens lead Anaïs Legand told reporters in Geneva.

The agency’s revised mortality estimate is based on laboratory‑confirmed cases, according to Legand. She described the figure as “huge,” emphasizing the urgency of coordinated public‑health action.

International partners, including Reuters and AP News, have pledged logistical support, but the volatile security environment remains a barrier.

Experts note that the current wave of Ebola follows the region’s broader experience with the pandemic of 2020‑22, underscoring the need for resilient health systems.
