Ebola aid cuts threaten DRC response as outbreak spreads

Amid escalating Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the recent reduction in financing – dubbed Ebola aid cuts – is eroding the fragile containment effort. Health officials warn that the loss of ↓ 30% of emergency funds could extend the outbreak beyond the Ituri mining belt into neighboring provinces and across the border into Uganda.

Ebola aid cuts and the race against a widening epidemic

The virus, which claims roughly half of those infected, has already recorded at least 240 deaths since early May. Overcrowded displacement camps, limited laboratory capacity, and intermittent fighting among rebel factions create a perfect storm for transmission. Field teams from the World Health Organization and partners are scrambling to vaccinate contacts, yet the cutbacks force them to prioritize high‑risk zones, leaving peripheral districts exposed. “Every dollar withdrawn translates into a missed vaccination,” says a senior epidemiologist, quoted to Reuters. The situation underscores a broader dilemma: as donor fatigue grows, the global health community risks a protracted crisis that could spill into the densely populated capital of Kampala.

“Without sustained support, we may see a resurgence that outlasts the current wave,”

warns a UN spokesperson. Immediate reinstatement of funding, coupled with a coordinated security corridor, remains the only viable path to curb the virus before it entrenches itself in the region’s fragile health systems.
