DR Congo Ebola outbreak: doctors warn epidemic will linger

More than a month after the DR Congo Ebola outbreak was declared, French health officials confirmed the continent’s first imported case, reigniting global concern. In the remote town of Mongbwalu, the epicentre of the crisis, a handful of patients have survived after receiving experimental antivirals, offering a sliver of optimism.

Yet frontline clinicians remain uneasy; daily case counts continue to climb, with ↓ 12 new infections reported this week alone. “We cannot afford complacency,” warned Dr. Jean‑Baptiste, a senior epidemiologist, speaking to Reuters.

“Each recovery is a beacon, but the shadow of transmission persists,”

The World Health Organization has urged neighboring provinces to tighten surveillance, echoing earlier alerts from CDC. As the region grapples with limited resources, the spectre of a broader pandemic looms, prompting donors to accelerate funding for vaccine trials.

Health workers on the ground stress that without sustained international support, the outbreak could outlast the rainy season, turning a temporary flare into a protracted health emergency.

Correction: An earlier dispatch misstated the number of new cases reported this week.
