Doctors warn that prior infection with one of dengue’s four serotypes does not shield against the others; a silent earlier exposure may have primed Small for a lethal second bite.

There is no antiviral therapy and no U.S.‑approved vaccine for adults. Management relies on aggressive hydration, rest and vigilant monitoring. Over‑the‑counter painkillers such as ibuprofen or aspirin are contraindicated because they amplify the virus‑induced bleeding risk.

Public health advisories stress repellents, eliminating standing water and wearing long sleeves when outdoors. The AP News notes that Aedes mosquitoes thrive in as little as a bottle cap of water, turning backyards into breeding grounds.

With climate shifts extending mosquito seasons, officials fear the trend may accelerate unless communities act swiftly.
