Lebanon War Powers Resolution Sparks Democratic Discord

House leaders are bracing for a bruising vote as Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s Lebanon War Powers Resolution forces a split among Democrats. “People are not happy,” one senior Democrat told Reuters, referring to the pressure to cast a ballot on a measure many view as a political flashpoint.

The two‑page bill orders President Trump to pull U.S. forces from Lebanon within ↓ 7 days of enactment, a timeline critics argue is unrealistic. While Israel’s ground push in southern Lebanon and threats against Hezbollah have inflamed regional tensions, no clear U.S. plan for a large‑scale incursion has emerged.

“The United States is enabling destruction with weapons, intelligence, logistics and diplomatic cover,” Rep. Tlaib said in a press release.

Democratic leadership worries the resolution could undercut covert efforts against Hezbollah, a concern echoed by ranking members of the Foreign Affairs, Armed Services and Intelligence committees—Greg Meeks, Adam Smith and Jim Himes—who remain on the fence.

Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries admitted he has “not taken a look” yet, hinting at drafting tweaks that might make the text more palatable. Yet a second senior Democrat dismissed the proposal as “a statement, not a war‑powers bill,” suggesting a ↓ 1 vote loss for the caucus.

Supporters, including Rep. Delia Ramirez, argue the measure is a moral imperative to halt what they call “genocide” in Lebanon. “Every day we wait, we enable more bloodshed,” she warned.

With a parallel Iran war‑powers resolution on the floor, the party’s internal calculus is volatile. If the text stays unchanged, analysts expect a wave of Democratic “no” votes, reshaping the narrow margins that usually define contentious foreign‑policy votes.
