Delhi heat wave forces workers to weigh health against wages

The Delhi heat wave that has blistered the capital since April is forcing construction crews, street vendors, and sanitation staff to make stark choices between paycheck and wellbeing. Daily shifts now stretch under oppressive heat, with temperatures soaring to ↓ 45°C, while overtime pay has slipped by ↓ 15% in many sectors.

Delhi heat wave threatens laborers’ livelihoods

Health officials warn that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can trigger heatstroke, dehydration, and chronic cardiovascular strain. Yet many laborers cannot afford to abandon the day’s earnings; a single missed day often means missing rent, school fees, or food supplies.

“I would rather risk a fever than lose the little money that puts food on the table,” says Rajesh Kumar, a 34‑year‑old construction helper.

Employers, citing tight project timelines, are reluctant to cut hours, even as the Reuters reports a 12% rise in heat‑related absenteeism across the city. Some municipal bodies have introduced mandatory rest breaks, but enforcement remains patchy.

The situation echoes the labor strains seen during the recent pandemic, when workers faced similar trade‑offs between health safeguards and income security. Advocacy groups are urging the Delhi government to subsidize cooling stations and enforce stricter heat‑exposure limits, arguing that long‑term productivity hinges on protecting the workforce.
