Cyclospora outbreak claims two fatalities in Michigan

Michigan health officials confirmed two deaths linked to the ongoing Cyclospora outbreak, the nation’s largest record of explosive diarrhea caused by the foodborne parasite. Medical records show both victims had serious pre‑existing conditions that likely worsened with dehydration.

The outbreak, tied to Taylor Farms shredded iceberg lettuce imported from Mexico, has already sickened thousands across at least nine states. Reuters reported that the lettuce recall came after the first cases emerged, but the state says the two patients fell ill before the recall was issued.

“We were aware of the situation but reporting was delayed due to ongoing investigations,” a spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said.

The parasite, a single‑cell organism, spreads via contaminated produce with uneven surfaces, such as lettuce, herbs, and berries. Public health experts warn that vulnerable populations—particularly those with compromised immune systems—face heightened risk.

To date, the outbreak accounts for ↓ 2 deaths and thousands of illnesses, prompting a nationwide review of produce safety protocols.

Readers are urged to check product origins before consumption.

AP News provides ongoing coverage of the investigation.

Correction: An earlier dispatch misstated the number of states affected; the correct figure is nine.
