Congo Ebola outbreak poised to become deadliest, WHO warns

Congo Ebola outbreak reaches alarming trajectory

The World Health Organization has issued a stark alert: the Congo Ebola outbreak is on course to eclipse all prior records, potentially becoming the deadliest episode of Ebola ever documented. Bundibugyo virus, the pathogen driving the surge, lacks any licensed vaccine or proven therapeutic, leaving health systems scrambling.

Fatality rates climb as resources dwindle

Since the first case was confirmed in early May, the death toll has climbed to ↓ 78 individuals, with a case‑fatality ratio hovering around ↓ 45%. Hospitals in North Kivu report oxygen shortages and overwhelmed isolation wards.

“We are confronting a pathogen with no antidote and a region already strained by conflict,” a WHO spokesperson told Reuters.

Neighboring nations have mobilized rapid response teams, yet cross‑border movement and lingering insecurity impede containment. Experts warn that without an accelerated vaccine rollout, the outbreak could spill into densely populated urban centers, amplifying transmission.

International donors are urged to fund emergency stockpiles of monoclonal antibodies, a measure highlighted by AP News as a potential lifesaver pending clinical validation.

Correction: An earlier dispatch misstated the death toll as 68; the correct figure is 78.
