cPanel plugin flaw forces rapid federal patch

The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency has issued an urgent directive giving federal entities ↓ 4 days to remediate a critical cPanel plugin flaw that attackers are exploiting in the wild.

What agencies must do

Administrators are instructed to disable the LiteSpeed cPanel user-end plugin, apply the vendor’s latest patch, and verify that no lingering backdoors remain.

“We are treating this as a high‑severity incident,” a CISA spokesperson said.

The vulnerability, tracked as CVE‑2024‑XXXX, allows remote code execution on any server running the affected plugin. Reuters reported that threat actors have already leveraged the flaw to exfiltrate data from compromised sites. Bloomberg notes that the patch rollout could strain IT resources already stretched by other high‑profile exploits. Agencies that fail to comply risk significant operational disruption and potential sanctions under federal cybersecurity mandates.
