Is the chip bubble finally bursting?

The sudden plunge of tech equities has reignited fears of a chip bubble across global markets. By 9:45 a.m. ET the Nasdaq Composite was down ↓ 2%, extending a ↓ 1.3% decline from the previous session. Equity analysts note that the slide reflects heightened scrutiny of cash‑flow prospects for AI‑linked chipmakers, not a systemic collapse.

“The AI winners have become darlings of momentum traders; a pull‑back now is almost inevitable,” said Andrew Slimmon, senior portfolio manager at Morgan Stanley, on CNBC.

In Asia, the Korean KOSPI slumped 10%, triggering a brief circuit breaker as Samsung and SK Hynix each fell 12%. European semiconductor names—STMicroelectronics, Infineon, and ASML—also slipped, echoing the broader sell‑off. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq remains up ↑ 12.6% year‑to‑date, underscoring the resilience of the underlying rally despite today’s volatility. Major tech names were not spared: Alphabet dipped >1% after two senior AI executives departed, Nvidia fell 3% following a warning from investor Michael Burry, and Qualcomm slumped >8%. Memory‑chip stalwarts such as Micron (-11%), SanDisk (-12%), and Seagate (-8%) also tumbled, while Intel dropped 6%. Even SpaceX, fresh from its debut, slipped another 4% after a 16% drop on Monday, leaving the share price at $148. Analysts such as Daniel Morris of BNP Paribas argue the current P/E of roughly 23 remains far below the pre‑dot‑com peak of 48, suggesting the market is not yet in crisis.
