The latest Census Bureau Vintage 2025 estimates reveal a stark national trend: the child population shrinking across the United States, with the sole bright spot being the South.

Child Population Shrinking: Regional Snapshot

From 2020 to 2025 the under‑18 cohort fell 1.8 million nationwide. The West bore the brunt, losing ↓ 5.7% of its children – a drop of 1,015,068 kids. By contrast, the South added 303,969 youngsters, lifting its total population by ↑ 6%, almost double the national 3.1% rise.

Migration and Births Fuel Southern Gains

County‑level data show metro areas in the South contributed 361,757 new minors, a 1.5% increase, while micro‑counties shed 18,280 children. The influx reflects a mix of families relocating and higher birth rates, a pattern echoed in recent Reuters analyses of post‑pandemic mobility.

“The South’s demographic swing reshapes school capacity and electoral calculus,” notes a demographer at Bloomberg.

Nationally, the median age edged to 39.4 years, and the 65‑plus cohort swelled 16.2%. Policymakers must grapple with an aging populace while the South’s child boom could amplify Black and Latino political influence—if infrastructure keeps pace.
