Spain deployed troops to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta after an unprecedented surge of migrants, marking the worst day since 2022. Within 24 hours, ↑ 49,000 people forced their way across the border, overwhelming local facilities and prompting frantic rescues.

Ceuta migrant crisis: humanitarian disaster unfolds

The influx coincided with Morocco activating water‑cannon trucks at the crossing gates, a stark escalation that officials say reflects growing tension between the two neighbours.

“We are witnessing a humanitarian emergency of historic proportions,” said a United Nations spokesperson, as the death toll rose to ↓ 12 in the past 48 hours.

Spanish authorities, backed by the European Union, have tightened border controls while pledging additional medical aid. Reuters reported that the rapid escalation could strain Spain’s asylum system for months.

Analysts warn that without a coordinated regional response, the crisis may spill over into other North‑African crossing points, fueling further instability.
