The United States CDC Ebola response is being amplified after the World Health Organization declared the outbreak a public‑health emergency of international concern.

CDC Ebola response expands to Congo and Uganda

Satish Pillai, the CDC’s incident manager, told reporters the agency will send additional experts, boost laboratory capacity, and intensify contact‑tracing through its in‑country offices. “The risk to the United States remains low,” Pillai said on a call Sunday. The agency has activated its emergency operations center and is mobilising ↑ 30 staff members to join the more than 30 already on the ground in each nation. Congo’s Ituri province has logged ↓ 8 confirmed cases of the Bundibugyo ebolavirus strain, 246 suspected infections and 80 suspected deaths, according to the Reuters tally. Uganda reports two infections and one death linked to travelers from Congo. No approved vaccine or treatment exists, and transmission occurs only when patients are symptomatic. The WHO’s declaration, the first of its kind since the 2024 mpox emergency, is intended to unlock international funding and coordination, as

“This event is considered extraordinary,”

WHO Director‑General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesh warned. The United States has issued two travel health notices urging Americans to adopt heightened precautions and has instituted airport exit screenings in the affected nations, while U.S. ports of entry will flag symptomatic travelers. The move comes amid growing concerns that the virus may have been circulating undetected for weeks, a scenario reminiscent of the recent pandemic response frameworks. In parallel, the CDC is tracking a separate hantavirus outbreak tied to a cruise ship, with 41 individuals under observation after three fatalities.
