Capital One released VulnHunter on Thursday, an open‑source AI‑driven security engine that scans source code for exploitable flaws before they ship to production.

VulnHunter’s attacker‑first forward analysis

The tool starts at likely entry points—APIs, network messages, file uploads—and reasons forward through application logic, mimicking a seasoned penetration tester but at machine scale.

Built‑in falsification engine reduces noise

After flagging a potential issue, a falsification engine attempts to disprove its own finding; only vulnerabilities that survive this internal challenge are presented to developers, dramatically cutting false positives.

“We felt an imperative to open‑source VulnHunter because modern software supply chains are deeply interconnected,” CISO Chris Nims told Reuters.

The engine runs on Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8 model, but the architecture is designed to accommodate other foundation models.

Capital One’s move follows a history of open‑source investment; the bank now hosts ↑ 40 public projects and contributes thousands of pull requests.

The decision also reflects lessons from the 2019 breach that exposed ↓ 100 million U.S. and Canadian customers, a incident that prompted an Bloomberg report on regulatory penalties.

By releasing VulnHunter under an Apache 2.0 license, Capital One invites the global security community to test, extend, and harden the tool, aiming to shift the defensive curve ahead of AI‑powered attackers.
