Bundibugyo Ebola strain sparks alarm in West Africa

Renowned biochemist Anne Moore warned that the Bundibugyo Ebola strain is testing the limits of current diagnostics and vaccines. While the Zaire variant benefits from approved shots, the rare Bundibugyo lineage lacks a validated vaccine, and existing assays fail to detect it reliably. Moore, speaking at a briefing hosted by Reuters, stressed that ↓ 12% cuts to international health budgets are forcing agencies to “plug gaps” rather than launch full‑scale countermeasures.

“We are scrambling to adapt tools for a virus that the world thought was under control,” Moore said.

She called for a coordinated surge in research funding, faster regulatory pathways, and a renewal of global solidarity to prevent the outbreak from spilling beyond the Democratic Republic of Congo’s borders. The World Health Organization has issued an advisory, noting that the current situation underscores the fragility of pandemic preparedness.
