A recent paper demonstrates that a single electron’s spin, confined in a quantum dot, can be shuttled between neighboring dots while preserving its quantum state, delivering the first practical example of moving qubits on a semiconductor wafer. Researchers report fidelity exceeding ↑ 95% across a 10‑micron transfer distance, rivaling ion‑trap performance.

Why Mobility Matters for Error Correction

Flexible connectivity lets any qubit pair be entangled on demand, simplifying the architecture of error‑corrected logical qubits. In contrast, fixed‑layout chips require complex routing layers that inflate error rates.

“Achieving on‑chip qubit transport bridges the gap between manufacturability and universal connectivity,” says lead author Dr. Lina Zhou.
