Bluesky DDoS attack causes rolling blackouts

At 1:42 AM ET the microblogging service reported a partial shutdown, later confirming a sophisticated Distributed Denial‑of‑Service assault that intensified through the day. The incident disrupted user feeds, notifications, threads and search, with the platform’s status page itself flickering in and out.

“We are actively mitigating a DDoS attack and have seen no evidence of unauthorized data access,” a Bluesky spokesperson said.

Engineers reported the disruption lasting ↓ 12 hours as mitigation tools were deployed. The outage, which began early Thursday, mirrors a brief disruption earlier this month and highlights the growing pressure on emerging social networks. Reuters notes a surge in DDoS incidents targeting niche platforms, while AP News stresses the need for robust traffic filtering. Bluesky has promised a further update by 1 PM ET on April 17.
