Asia defense boom reshapes global arms supply chain

For decades the West supplied the world’s most sophisticated weapons while Asian nations were largely buyers. The Asia defense boom is turning that script upside down, as regional firms move from importers to exporters of high‑tech armaments.

Manufacturing shift from West to East

Japan’s recent loosening of export rules and South Korea’s aggressive push into land‑system sales illustrate a broader pivot. In 2025 Asian defense outlays jumped ↑ 6% to roughly $573 billion, outpacing the Reuters-cited global growth of $2.6 trillion.

U.S. planners now view Asian capacity as essential; the Pentagon announced plans to expand production of solid‑rocket motors in the region, a move echoed in a Bloomberg report on distributed manufacturing.

“The speed, scale and cost advantage of Asian suppliers is becoming indispensable for NATO allies,” a senior defense analyst noted.

Beyond quantity, Asian firms are betting on high‑margin sectors—air‑defense networks, autonomous drones and AI‑driven command systems—where software upgrades create recurring revenue streams.
