Apple’s First Water-Resistant iPad Mini Set for October

The upcoming iPad mini will be the first water-resistant iPad Apple ships, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. It is designed to survive splashes in bathrooms or poolside use without compromising audio.

Sealed acoustic design replaces speaker holes

Apple’s engineers have adopted a vibration‑based speaker that turns the tablet’s chassis into a diaphragm, erasing the traditional grille that often lets moisture in. This method differs from the iPhone’s gasket‑and‑adhesive seal.

“A mechanically actuated panel acoustic system could let the iPad mini achieve true IP‑rating protection,” Gurman wrote.

While the exact IP rating remains unconfirmed, Apple’s iPhone line enjoys IP68 certification, tolerating ↑ 6 meters of water for 30 minutes.

Beyond water resistance, the device will debut an 8.4‑inch OLED panel, the second iPad family to adopt the technology after the iPad Pro, promising deeper blacks and better efficiency. A Korean source says the panel runs at 60 Hz, so ProMotion won’t be included.

Performance upgrades are also on the docket. Leaked code points to an A20 Pro chip, a step up from the A17 Pro that powered the October 2024 refresh. Pricing starts at $599, with analysts expecting the OLED model to add ↑ $100 to the baseline.

Samsung Display has reportedly begun mass‑producing the OLED modules, bolstering the October timeline. The move narrows the gap between Apple’s mini and dedicated e‑readers like the Kindle Paperwhite, which already boast full immersion ratings.
