Recent analysis published in JAMA Pediatrics reveals that antibiotic resistance in kids has been climbing steadily for two decades, with the World Health Organization warning that the trend could become catastrophic by 2035.

Rising antibiotic resistance in kids across all regions

The study examined 106,000 bacterial isolates from patients aged 0‑18 in 82 countries between 2004 and 2022. Resistance was highest in intensive‑care units, among children under three, and in low‑resource settings. Overall, ↓ 48% of samples in low‑income nations showed resistance to first‑line “Access” antibiotics in 2022, up from 44% a decade earlier.

Projected trends to 2035

Modelling suggests that “Watch” category drugs could see ↓ 24% resistance in high‑income countries and ↓ 48% in low‑income regions by 2035, while “Reserve” antibiotics may climb to 25% and 37% respectively. Dr. Yanhong Jessika Hu warns that these are “warning scenarios, not inevitable outcomes,” and that decisive policy action could bend the curve.

“It’s real, and it’s happening,” said co‑author Dr. Penelope Bryant, emphasizing the silent pandemic that has largely escaped public attention.

Adult‑focused surveillance systems have historically masked pediatric trends, making it harder for health ministries to craft age‑appropriate stewardship programs. The researchers stress that children have fewer therapeutic options, so preserving existing drugs is paramount.

Data gaps remain: the sample pool is not nationally representative, and many low‑income hospitals lack comprehensive reporting. The team has released the full dataset on the AMR‑in‑Kids portal for independent verification.
