Judge Rejects DOJ Push to Force Sale of Google ad exchange

A U.S. federal judge has ruled that Google will not be forced to divest its Google ad exchange, preserving the platform that matches advertisers with publishers. The decision follows a 2025 antitrust verdict where the Justice Department and a coalition of states argued that Google abused dominance in online display ads. While the court agreed the company improperly locked publishers into its exchange, it stopped short of finding illegal conduct in the tools used by advertisers.

Future of the Google ad exchange

The exchange represents ↓ 5% of Google’s overall ad revenue, a modest slice that nonetheless influences pricing dynamics. DOJ officials maintain that a forced sale would level competition, but the remedy now appears unlikely.

“The ruling sends a measured signal to Big Tech,” a DOJ spokesperson said, per Reuters.

Analysts note that keeping the exchange intact may limit disruption across Google’s broader ad ecosystem, while the broader antitrust agenda continues to evolve.
