Trump border wall plan meets stubborn Texas opposition

The Trump administration delivered a stark warning to local officials: resistance to the Trump border wall plan will not be entertained. In a closed‑door session, Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott told judges and sheriffs from Hudspeth to Presidio counties that construction on a 30‑foot steel barrier along more than 200 miles is non‑negotiable.

“It’s like my dad would say, pissing in the wind,”

Val Verde County Judge Lewis Owens said, condemning the approach as “asinine.” County Sheriff Ronny Dodson confirmed the meeting excluded ranchers, eco‑tourism operators and private landowners. Transparency remains thin; Scott admitted the federal pause was merely a brief reset. A federal judge’s temporary restraining order halts work on roughly ↓ 600 miles of the border until month‑end, but private‑land construction could resume soon. In Presidio County, only ↓ 20% of landowners west of the state park have signed easements, versus ↓ 31% east of the park, according to Commissioner Deirdre Hisler. Officials warn non‑compliant owners face eminent‑domain lawsuits. CBP claims it is evaluating “technology options” to achieve President Trump’s zero‑crossing goal while preserving “the most secure border in American history.” The Big Bend region, home to national and state parks, may dodge a full‑height wall but faces new patrol roads and vehicle barriers that threaten tourism. Dodson told reporters the wall chatter on social media is already scaring visitors away, hurting a sector that sustains the local economy. The push mirrors CBP’s broader rollout, which has already erected less than 200 miles of barrier and sparked legal battles on tribal lands in Arizona. Reuters reported similar disputes nationwide.
