Record Ocean Temperature Hits New High as Supercharged El Niño Fuels Unprecedented Strain

On 22 August, the Copernicus Climate Change Service reported a global average sea‑surface temperature of ↑ 21.1°C, eclipsing the 2024 peak of 21.09 °C. This record ocean temperature arrives as the El Niño that officially began 11 June adds a fresh pulse of heat to a century‑long warming trend.

“The ocean is under unprecedented strain,” said Samantha Burgess, strategic lead for climate at Copernicus.

Human‑driven greenhouse‑gas emissions continue to trap infrared radiation, raising baseline temperatures. The current El Niño—a warm phase of the Pacific‑based ENSO cycle—amplifies that baseline, pushing the climate system toward a “super” event that could trigger humanitarian stress and push marine ecosystems past tipping points.

Satellite‑derived SST data have already set monthly records for June and July. The late‑year daily peak is unusual; historically, March‑April host the hottest single‑day readings after the Southern Hemisphere summer. The anomaly underscores the cumulative effect of decades of anthropogenic warming combined with the present El Niño surge.

Consequences ripple beyond the sea. Higher SSTs accelerate sea‑level rise, intensify marine heatwaves, and jeopardize coral reefs, fisheries and coastal livelihoods. Moreover, a warmer ocean feeds back into atmospheric patterns, reshaping weather extremes worldwide.

The U.S. NOAA Climate Prediction Center assigns a ↑ 90% chance of a very strong El Niño persisting through winter, while the UK Met Office warns this could be the most intense El Niño of the modern era, rivaling 19th‑century benchmarks. Early impacts are already visible: India’s monsoon rains are well below normal, and the U.S. Northwest is experiencing milder winter anomalies.

Experts caution that while a strong El Niño does not guarantee catastrophic weather everywhere, the probability of extreme events—floods, droughts, heat spikes—has risen sharply. Continuous monitoring by agencies such as Reuters and Bloomberg will be essential as the climate system approaches another critical juncture.
