Slack Code turns AI coding into collaborative chat, not solo terminal

Slack’s new “Slack Code” feature lifts AI‑driven programming from isolated terminals into shared channels, letting whole teams watch, steer and ship code together.

Slack Code brings AI coding agents into group chat

The service bundles Anthropic’s Claude Code, Cognition’s Devin, GitHub Copilot and Vercel’s agent, each callable from any conversation. When tagged, an agent spawns a dedicated channel, posts diffs, live previews and a running plan, then archives the thread, leaving a searchable audit trail.

“Code is no longer the bottleneck,” interim CEO Rob Seaman told reporters.

In a live demo, a broken feature reported in an engineering channel was grabbed by Devin, which replied with an emoji, opened a pull request and even opened Chrome DevTools to verify the fix. A designer dropped a Figma mock into the same channel; the agent incorporated it without missing a beat. The cloud‑based model creates an auditable record; Cognition claims its internal merged PR count has risen ↑ 10x while headcount grew only ↓ 40%. Visibility, not secrecy, is the proposed guard against “AI slop,” says VP of product Katie Steigman, noting that teammates can comment on each step. Security hinges on the agent inheriting the invoking user’s ACLs; there is no “god mode” or separate service identity. Enterprise IT teams therefore avoid shadow‑IT pitfalls. The rollout coincides with Salesforce’s AI push after a turbulent year; Slack’s rebuilt bot, powered by Anthropic, was the fastest‑adopted feature in the firm’s 27‑year history, per Reuters. Slack Code is positioned as the first of many “agent channels,” with plans for marketing and legal use cases. Executives anticipate a split: most routine work will flow through multiplayer channels, while deep architectural thinking remains in private terminals. The real test will be whether the collective view trims bottlenecks or merely amplifies noise.
