A new Pew Research Center poll released June 2026 finds that young adults AI concerns have jumped dramatically.

young adults AI concerns dominate the conversation

More than ↓ 55% of adults under 30 say they are more worried than excited about AI’s expanding role, a 24‑point swing since 2021. Only one in ten feels excitement, while a third remain neutral. The sentiment aligns with older cohorts: 51% of 30‑49‑year‑olds, 47% of 50‑64, and 59% of seniors share the same worry. A striking ↓ 73% of the under‑30 group now believes AI will erase jobs in the next two decades, up from 61% a year earlier, matching the 71% figure across all ages. The Reuters analysis links this anxiety to headlines about automation and a recent pandemic-induced shift to remote work, which has reduced entry‑level hiring. An Axios‑Generation Lab poll reports 27% of 18‑34‑year‑olds think they or a close contact have lost a job to AI. Meanwhile, unemployment among college graduates under 29 rose from 3.1% pre‑COVID to 3.7% since 2022, according to the Labor Department. Experts caution that actual AI‑driven layoffs are rarer than perceived, but the narrative of a looming job‑loss crisis fuels the growing apprehension.

“The fear is less about current job cuts and more about an existential threat to future career pathways,” a senior economist told Bloomberg.

Wall Street remains bullish, yet the American public, especially the under‑30 demographic, is increasingly skeptical about AI’s societal upside.
