Data Center Gas Plants Set to Spike U.S. Power Emissions by 20%

A wave of bespoke natural‑gas power stations, dubbed data center gas plants, is reshaping the U.S. electricity mix and threatens to lift sector‑wide emissions by ↑ 20%. BloombergNEF tracks 99 proposals that could spew roughly 318 million metric tons of CO₂ each year if operated at typical capacity, a share that rivals a third of the nation’s power output.

Why data center gas plants are emerging

Rapid demand from AI‑driven workloads has left developers scrambling for reliable power. With grid interconnection queues stretching years, many are turning to behind‑the‑meter gas generators that bypass utility approvals. “There is immense pressure on the whole sector to get power, and get it fast,” said David Pomerantz, executive director of the Energy and Policy Institute, a watchdog that favors renewables.

“The companies that set the bar for corporate climate action are now bringing net new fossil infrastructure online at a breakneck pace,” warned former Microsoft activist Drew Wilkinson.

The proposed capacity totals about 126 GW, enough to power New York City on a sweltering summer day. If all plants run flat‑out, annual emissions could top ↓ 45 million metric tons CO₂e, nearly half of Washington state’s output. Projects span 22 states, with Texas hosting over a third, attracted by abundant gas supplies and permissive regulations.

Major cloud players are on board. Amazon and Microsoft have filed for sites in West Texas that together could generate over 10 GW. Chevron is constructing a plant to serve a Microsoft‑backed data center on a 2,000‑acre plot nearby. Both firms tout ongoing clean‑energy commitments, and Amazon says it is evaluating solar and battery options for the Pecos County development.
