Apple Watch: What’s Next in 2024 and Beyond

The latest episode of The MacRumors Show dissected the Apple Watch’s trajectory, noting that the coming generation may look quiet on the surface but hides a potential overhaul for 2027. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports a surprise return of the white ceramic case, first introduced with Series 2 in 2016, and possibly slated for release this year or as late as 2027. The ceramic shell, marketed then as four times harder than stainless steel, vanished after the Series 6, making it a collector’s darling today.

Mid‑cycle upgrades appear modest: the Series 12 and Ultra 4 will likely retain the case debuted with Series 10 in 2024, while the S10 chip receives a performance bump. Gurman also expects fresh band colors and incremental health sensor tweaks, but no major redesign. An unnamed Weibo leaker hints Apple is chasing longer battery life, with the current Series 11 offering ↑ 24-hour endurance or ↑ 38-hour in Low Power Mode.

“Apple is determined to reinvent its wearables to stay ahead of competition,” Gurman told Bloomberg.

Looking ahead, the “Instant Digital” source predicts a 2027/2028 overhaul featuring a magnetic band‑attachment system, freeing internal volume for a larger battery and possibly a microLED display—an idea first floated in 2023 under the “Apple Watch X” moniker. DigiTimes suggests a high‑end model could sport eight sensors arranged in a ring on the underside, while Apple’s OLED backplane research hints at a thinner, more power‑efficient screen.

The industrial design team is reportedly weighing screen‑less fitness bands, smart rings, and even round‑display prototypes, though none are expected to ship soon. Premium variants above the Ultra line and budget options below the SE are also on the table as Apple eyes AI‑driven health features and a non‑invasive blood‑sugar sensor slated for 2030. Stay tuned via Reuters for further updates.
