Solar Power Deployment Hits 3‑Terawatt Threshold Unnoticed by the World

Solar power deployment reaches 3‑terawatt milestone

The rapid rise of solar power deployment has become one of the 21st‑century’s most consequential shifts, yet it slipped past most headlines. After cracking ↑ 100 GW in 2012, the world needed a decade to add the first terawatt. The next terawatt arrived in under three years, and by 2026 the ↑ 3 TW threshold was crossed – a fact few noticed.

“Take a train anywhere in the UK and you’ll likely see solar panels on the rooftops,” says Lara Hayim, head of solar research at BloombergNEF.

Visually, the signal is undeniable. Forecasts from Bloomberg predict more than 9 TW of capacity by 2036, rendering today’s 3 TW milestone almost trivial. The first terawatt was driven by wealthy nations subsidising installations while China and low‑income regions lagged. The second and third terawatts saw China seize the lead, but the share of new capacity in poorer countries has plateaued since 2020.

Emerging solar booms beyond China

Pakistan, Nigeria, the Philippines and even smaller markets such as Cuba and Lebanon have recorded sharp rooftop‑solar growth, expanding the roster of nations with at least 1 GW installed from 42 in 2020 to 74 last year.

China’s build‑out has outpaced grid upgrades and storage, causing curtailment rates to climb ↓ 15 % during peak daylight hours. Its new five‑year plan therefore emphasises renewable consumption over sheer production.

Analysts at Reuters expect developing‑country shares to rebound, with over a quarter of all new solar capacity projected to be installed in these markets by 2036, while the share in affluent nations may dip to roughly 20 %.

Financing remains the chief obstacle for low‑income regions, even as skilled‑labour shortages and grid‑integration challenges are gradually overcome. Without widespread battery storage, the solar surge risks stalling; as Hayim warns, “Without enough energy storage, you cannot maximise solar’s potential.”
