ICE detention deaths reach 22‑year high

In the first quarter of fiscal year 2026, ICE detention deaths surged to a level not seen since 2004, prompting families and advocates to demand accountability.

Parady La, a 46‑year‑old Cambodian‑American, died three days after his arrest at the Federal Detention Center in Philadelphia. The agency’s report described him as “distressed and stuporous” before he became unresponsive. His daughter, Jazmine, says the family still lacks answers.

“The uncertainty makes it hard to grieve,” Jazmine La told Reuters.

Since October, 35 detainees have died, compared with just three in the entire 2022 fiscal year. The fatality rate climbed to ↓ 88.9 per 100,000 person‑years, up from ↓ 13 the previous year.

Why the spike?

Researchers point to rapid expansion of detention facilities, overcrowding, and weakened medical oversight. A JAMA study notes that most deaths are “preventable with routine care.” Cardiovascular events accounted for 18.5% of deaths, infections 13.8%, suicide 10.8% and nearly half remain “undetermined.”

Under the Trump administration, the detainee population swelled ↑ 70% to over 68,000, according to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse. AP News reported a parallel rise in suicide cases.

Legal experts argue that new, hastily built centers lack independent medical review. “The system cannot characterize its own mortality,” said Dr. Sanjay Basu, co‑author of the JAMA report.

Families of the deceased, including La’s and Chaofeng Ge’s, have filed wrongful‑death suits and Freedom‑of‑Information requests. DHS’s internal watchdog has launched two reviews, but critics say transparency remains insufficient.

As the detention network grows, the question of how many more lives will be lost hangs over Washington.
