Amsterdam University Medical Center researchers have produced the first detailed 3D map of the clitoris’s internal nerve structure, revealing a significantly more complex bundle of nerves than previously imagined. The map traces five branching nerve pathways, some extending beyond where earlier models assumed they ended. This breakthrough comes 30 years after the penis nerve network was mapped in the late 1990s, highlighting a persistent knowledge gap in female anatomy research.Study lead Ju Young Lee emphasized that outdated anatomical data often became embedded in medical textbooks without proper scrutiny, creating decades of misinformation.

“This isn’t just about understanding anatomy—it’s about improving surgical outcomes and patient care,”

Lee stated. The findings could transform pelvic surgeries, from cancer treatments to cosmetic procedures, by helping surgeons avoid unintentional nerve damage. The research also offers hope for reconstructive surgeries for survivors of female genital mutilation.↑ 30 years of scientific oversight have finally been addressed with this high-resolution imaging study, though the research has not yet undergone peer review. Medical fields ranging from oncology to reconstructive surgery stand to benefit from this long-overdue mapping of a body part found on half the human population.
