U.S. eateries that rely on crisp greens have endured a turbulent 2026, first grappling with lettuce price spikes driven by an unprecedented Arizona heat wave and then a cyclospora outbreak linked to shredded iceberg lettuce.

Yum Brands disclosed that Taco Bell’s U.S. same‑store sales fell ↓ 2% in the July‑September quarter, a swing from a ↑ 7% increase in the preceding quarter.

Federal investigators traced the diarrheal illness to shredded iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms, prompting Taco Bell to pull the product on July 17 and the supplier to issue a recall of Mexican‑grown lettuce the next day.

“Consumers now understand the issue isn’t isolated to Taco Bell,” CEO Chris Turner said, adding that swift communication and $1 Mexican pizza specials helped restore traffic.

Other chains feel the ripple. Chipotle cut its sales outlook to a modest 1% rise for the same period, while salad‑centric brands Chopt and Sweetgreen reported foot‑traffic drops of 24% and 10 percentage points respectively, according to data from Placer.ai and M Science.

The CDC has logged 6,707 confirmed cyclospora cases as of July 27, with new clusters still emerging. Reuters notes that lettuce prices surged nearly 20% between January and June, and the USDA reports a 33% year‑over‑year rise in average fresh‑lettuce costs.

Analyst Elizabeth Canales of Mississippi State University attributes the supply shock to early‑season heat in Arizona that forced crops to mature prematurely, creating a gap that California could not fill until late April. Elevated fuel prices, spurred by geopolitical tensions, further strained the cold‑chain logistics essential for preserving lettuce.
