US borrowing costs reach 19‑year peak

The latest Treasury auction data show the 10‑year note yield climbing to ↑ 4.9%, the highest level since 2005. Federal Reserve officials kept the policy rate unchanged at 5.25‑5.50% despite mounting pressure from markets that fear a spill‑over from the Iran‑Israel confrontation could ignite a new inflation surge. Investors are pricing in a steeper term premium as geopolitical risk premiums tighten.

“The market is signalling that the Fed may have to stay the course longer than previously thought,” noted a senior strategist at Reuters.

Meanwhile, the Consumer Price Index rose ↓ 0.2% in the latest month, keeping core inflation above the Fed’s 2% target. The central bank’s stance reflects a calculation that premature easing could reignite price pressures, especially if oil supplies are disrupted by the ongoing conflict. Analysts at Bloomberg warn that any escalation could push borrowing costs even higher, tightening credit conditions for households and corporations alike. The data underscore a delicate balance: holding rates steady while markets brace for potential shocks.
