FIFA stake sale ignites fierce backlash

FIFA announced a new subsidiary that could sell up to ↑ 4.2 billion in minority shares of its World Cup commercial rights, a move critics label the FIFA stake sale. The proposal, unveiled on Tuesday, would create “FIFA Forward Enterprise” to bundle broadcast, sponsorship and ticketing revenues, then offer investors a slice of no more than 20%.

Political and commercial entanglements

Opponents argue the deal deepens ties between FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Reuters-reported investors linked to the Trump family, notably a firm founded by Joshua Kushner. UEFA warned that “the soul of football is not a commodity,” and hinted at a possible boycott.

“The sport belongs to fans, not financiers,” said former FIFA chief Sepp Blatter.

UEFA, CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation all voiced “deep concern” over the lack of consultation. The English FA, whose chair Debbie Hewitt also serves as a FIFA vice‑president, warned that the process bypassed established governance.

Financial stakes and risk

FIFA claims the infusion would boost the “FIFA Fast Forward Program” to $20 million per member association in the next cycle, rising to $24 million by 2038. Critics note a potential ↓ 12% dip in fan trust could erode long‑term revenues, especially after ticket‑price spikes during the post-pandemic 2026 World Cup.

Legislators in Washington have already demanded a hearing, accusing Infantino of “oligarchic corruption” and calling for transparency on the deal’s financial terms.
