Brian Chesky X hack: AI‑generated tokenization spam hijacks CEO’s feed

Airbnb co‑founder and chief executive Brian Chesky discovered on Monday that his X account had been compromised. Within minutes a multi‑tweet thread surfaced, touting “real‑world asset tokenization” – a buzz phrase from the crypto sector – and warning followers of an imminent market shift.

The posts, now removed, were riddled with hallmarks of low‑quality AI output, prompting users to label them “AI slop.” Bloomberg’s Joseph Weisenthal noted the absence of commas as a tell‑tale sign. An AI‑detection tool from Pangram flagged the entire thread as ↑ 100% AI‑generated.

Why the hijack matters for cyber security

Chesky, who routinely shares product updates, earnings commentary and occasional crowdsourced ideas with his ↑ 1.2M followers, has rarely spoken on crypto. The sudden pivot raised alarms across the security community. X’s internal response team classified the breach as a “high‑profile compromise” and restored the account on Tuesday evening.

“When a CEO’s voice is hijacked, trust erodes instantly,” said communications strategist Lulu Cheng Meservey.

Airbnb declined comment. The compromised thread was a reply to a user citing Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev’s recent CNBC interview on tokenized assets, linking the incident to broader market chatter.

Experts warn that the surge of AI‑generated spam is straining the attention economy. A Reuters analysis notes that roughly one‑in‑four long‑form social posts now originate from AI, while a Bloomberg report flags the phenomenon as a growing vector for misinformation.

For context, the pandemic pandemic era saw a dramatic rise in automated content, a trend that has only accelerated.
