Dyson Hushjet Mini Cool review: Does the $100 bladeless fan earn the hype?

Two sweltering heatwaves – one in London, another in Chicago – forced me to put the new Dyson Hushjet Mini Cool through its paces. The $99.99 bladeless fan promises portable power that rivals pricier rivals.

Dyson Hushjet Mini Cool review – first impressions

The device weighs just 0.46 lb, fits in a one‑liter belt bag, and comes with a neck strap, stand and velvet pouch. Its tubular body houses a brush‑less DC motor that pushes air through a starburst nozzle. The design looks odd – some liken it to a sea‑lamprey – but the lack of exposed blades means it slides into backpacks without snagging.

Performance and airflow

Five speed settings plus a Boost mode deliver gusts that feel like a handheld jet engine. Dyson claims up to 80 ft/s (≈55 mph); while I didn’t measure it, the wind cut through a summer afternoon in seconds. The lowest setting produces a gentle breeze, suitable for indoor use while the unit charges via USB‑C.

“It feels like a mini‑vacuum turned into a fan,” one tester told Reuters.

Noise is the trade‑off. Even on the first speed a whirring motor is audible; higher settings emit a high‑pitched whine comparable to a hair dryer. In a crowded bar the sound blends in, but on a quiet sidewalk it draws attention.

Battery life

The 5,000 mAh cell sustains ↑ 6h 29m on the lowest setting and about 50 minutes on the highest non‑Boost speed. A full charge takes roughly 2.5 hours, a shade quicker than the advertised three hours.

Price positioning

At $99.99 the Hushjet undercuts the Shark ChillPill’s $149.99 price tag – a ↓ $50 advantage – yet both units are louder than budget fans found on Amazon or Temu. For most consumers, a cheap handheld fan will suffice; the Hushjet shines for outdoor events, golf outings, or festivals where power outweighs discretion.

Verdict

The Dyson Hushjet Mini Cool delivers astonishing airflow for its size, but its price and noise level limit broad appeal. Buy it on sale, pair it with earplugs, and reserve it for noisy venues. Otherwise, a budget alternative will meet everyday cooling needs.
