Trump NATO summit loyalty test

President Trump touched down in Ankara for the Trump NATO summit with a clear message: allies must prove their allegiance or face consequences. The Iran episode has hardened his stance, and he arrived bristling after European capitals refused to host U.S. strikes or open bases for a potential Hormuz operation.

In the opening remarks, he warned that “we don’t need their money — we don’t need anything,” insisting that loyalty is the only currency that matters. Reuters noted his remarks echo a years‑long campaign questioning the value of the alliance.

Military posture under pressure

The Pentagon has already cut the number of U.S. Army brigade combat teams in Europe from four to three, cancelling a planned deployment of roughly ↓ 4,000 troops to Poland. Simultaneously, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth announced a six‑month review of U.S. forces, branding the refusal of base access as “shameful.”

“The United States will not subsidise a complacent Europe,” Trump told reporters.

U.S. Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker signalled a push for allies to reach ↑ 5% of GDP on defence, shifting the burden of conventional security to Europe and Canada.

While Trump meets Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has privately urged him to halt sales of advanced weapons to Turkey, fearing further anti‑Israel rhetoric.

Side meetings include a high‑stakes session with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who hopes to secure Patriot air‑defence systems and a renewed diplomatic push to end the war. European officials, however, argue that recent U.S. statements suggest Ukraine now holds the battlefield initiative, reducing the urgency for fresh peace talks.

Back‑channel talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin continue, as Trump claims both leaders feel pressure to end the conflict, though insiders warn Putin’s calculus differs sharply.

The summit will close with a press conference before Trump returns to Washington on Wednesday evening.
