iOS 27 Shortcuts: Natural‑Language Creation

Apple’s iOS 27 Shortcuts overhaul turns a once‑daunting automation tool into a conversational assistant. Powered by Apple Intelligence, users can now type or speak natural‑language commands and watch the system assemble a functional shortcut in seconds. Describe a Shortcut opens a text box where you state the desired outcome – for example, “Set tomorrow’s alarm based on my first calendar event, turn on Sleep Focus, and dim the bedroom lights.” The AI parses intent, selects appropriate actions, and builds the shortcut.

Iterative Refinement

After the initial draft, the app lists each step. Tap the ► button to run a live test. If tweaks are needed, the “Describe a change” field accepts further natural‑language input, allowing multiple refinement cycles until the result matches expectations.

“I told my iPhone to text my partner an ETA when I leave work, and it just worked,” says a beta tester.

Shortcuts can be triggered by time, location, app launch, system events such as a screenshot, or an incoming notification. New triggers in iOS 27 include notification receipt, keyboard connection, and Apple Watch workout start. The expanded action set adds the ability to record notes, manage Messages threads, auto‑enhance photos, and manipulate Reminders groups.

Advanced users may switch to manual editing for complex logic, while the AI mode remains available for quick adjustments. Data can be stored within a shortcut, enabling counters or list updates across runs.

Three new AI models – Cloud, Cloud Pro, and on‑device – power the experience. Cloud Pro can browse the web, delivering up‑to‑date facts when a shortcut asks “What’s the latest tech news?” Adoption metrics show a ↑ 27% rise in shortcut creations among iPhone 15 Pro owners in the first month.

Cross‑platform support extends the Describe a Shortcut feature to iPadOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate, provided the hardware runs Apple Intelligence (iPhone 15 Pro+, M‑series iPad, or Apple‑silicon Mac). For a deeper dive, see Reuters or Bloomberg. Correction: An earlier version misstated the iPad model requirement; it is the iPad mini A17 Pro, not A16.
