bear emergency response drill in Yaita, Japan

Rising sightings of brown bears in Japan’s countryside have prompted Yaita’s municipal office to stage a bear emergency response exercise on a primary‑school playground. Local officials, teachers and roughly ↑30 volunteers ran through evacuation routes, simulated first‑aid, and practiced safe food storage, mirroring guidelines from the Reuters wildlife safety brief.

“We must be ready before a real incident occurs,” said Yaita’s safety chief.

The drill, timed with the autumn bear migration, also included a briefing on communication protocols with the prefectural police. Community members reported heightened confidence, a sentiment echoed by nearby towns adopting similar drills.
