At the alpine Bürgenstock resort on Lake Lucerne, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and senior envoys sat down with Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad‑Bagher Ghalibaf and foreign minister Abbas Araghchi for the inaugural round of U.S. Iran Direct Negotiations.

The summit, dubbed the Lake Lucerne Summit, marks the first face‑to‑face dialogue since the Islamabad meeting in April and is slated to trigger ↑ 60 days of intensive nuclear talks aimed at curbing Tehran’s enrichment capacity. Mediators from Pakistan and Qatar, including their prime ministers and Pakistan’s top general, convened with both delegations before a trilateral session that included Qatar’s foreign ministry. The Iranian side signaled that discussions will also address the Lebanon ceasefire, U.S. oil‑sale waivers and the release of frozen assets, notably a ↑ $6 billion tranche held in Qatar for humanitarian imports.
