Apple chips in US have entered a new chapter after President Trump announced on Thursday that the iPhone and Mac maker struck a preliminary deal with Intel to produce a subset of its proprietary silicon on American soil.

Apple chips in US: Details of the Intel tie‑up

The announcement, posted on the president’s social‑media feed, sent Intel shares up ↑ 9% in pre‑market trading, while Apple nudged 0.6% . The Wall Street Journal earlier reported that the two companies are negotiating a contract that would see Intel fabricate Apple‑designed processors using its own fabs, mirroring the current arrangement with Taiwan’s TSMC. Analysts note that Intel may target lower‑tier M‑series chips destined for entry‑level iPads and Macs, a segment that has traditionally relied on TSMC’s capacity. Intel’s turnaround under CEO Lip‑Bu Tan, who succeeded Pat Gelsinger, appears to be paying off; the chipmaker’s market value has swelled to $608.7 billion and its stock has climbed ↑ 464% over the past year, buoyed by a 10 % government stake converted from unpaid CHIPS Act grants. Apple, meanwhile, has been pressured by a bottleneck in A‑series chip supply; Tim Cook told investors that the rollout of the iPhone 17 was hampered by insufficient A19 and A19 Pro wafers from TSMC, as the foundry diverts capacity to AI‑focused servers. Diversifying to Intel could give Apple a domestic fallback and reduce geopolitical risk.

“This partnership underscores our commitment to American manufacturing and security,” Trump wrote.

Neither company has issued an official comment, but the move signals a shift in the tech supply chain amid rising U.S. emphasis on on‑shore production. For further details see Reuters and Bloomberg.
