The trajectory of US-Iran ties over the past six years reads like a cautionary tale of diplomatic volatility.

US-Iran ties under Trump: a rapid descent

In May 2018 President Donald Trump withdrew America from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, instantly revoking key sanctions relief. Sanctions re‑imposed hammered Tehran’s oil exports, with revenues shrinking ↓ 15% within months.

Washington’s “maximum pressure” campaign sparked a cascade of retaliatory moves: missile tests, proxy skirmishes, and a hardened rhetoric that left diplomatic channels frayed.

“We are witnessing a fundamental breakdown in trust,” a senior State Department official told Reuters.

Congressional opposition to any revival of the JCPOA intensified, stalling negotiations even as regional allies warned of spill‑over effects.

From deadlock to the 2026 prospect

By late 2023, a pragmatic faction within both capitals signaled willingness to explore a new framework, eyeing a tentative 2026 accord. Yet the legacy of the Trump era—sanctions, rhetoric, and a shattered confidence—casts a long shadow over any breakthrough.

Analysts at Bloomberg note that without a clear roadmap, the risk of another escalation remains high, potentially destabilizing oil markets and regional security.
