Strait of Hormuz reopening reshapes oil markets

The U.S.–Iran memorandum of understanding clears the Strait of Hormuz for traffic on Friday, but analysts warn the biggest oil disruption in recent memory will not vanish overnight. In the three months of blockage, the world lost ↓ 2 billion barrels of crude, forcing reserve draws and rationing across Europe and Asia.

While price spikes have eased, shipping insurers remain wary, and mines still litter the seabed. Capital Economics’ Jason Tuvey notes that

“~↑ 80% of energy flows could be back by Q3, yet true normalcy may linger into 2027.”

Tankers rerouted to alternate ports now face weeks‑long voyages to re‑enter the Persian Gulf. Producers, having capped output when storage filled, must restart wells carefully to avoid damage—a process highlighted by Hamad Hussain of Capital Economics.

Assuming the strait stays open, Reuters and Bloomberg project that Gulf supply constraints will ease over several months, limiting further price declines. Simultaneously, nations rebuilding reserves after the pandemic surge will add demand as rationing eases.
