Iran peace deal under fire

Washington’s fragile Iran peace deal is testing its limits after Israel announced it will maintain a permanent military presence in Lebanon, a move that Tehran condemns as a direct breach of the 2023 accord brokered by former President Trump. Analysts warn the deployment could trigger a cascade of retaliatory strikes, pulling the United States into a new front while the Biden administration scrambles to keep diplomatic channels open.

“We cannot allow an open‑ended Israeli foothold on Lebanon’s border without risking escalation,” a senior State Department official told Reuters.

The Israeli Defense Forces have continued air patrols over southern Lebanon on Monday, despite repeated pleas from Washington for restraint. Meanwhile, the White House’s push to revive the Iran peace deal faces a ↓ 4% dip in congressional support, according to a recent poll. The Kremlin and Moscow‑aligned factions in Tehran have seized on the discord, calling the U.S. “unreliable.” Future negotiations will now have to contend with an entrenched Israeli stance that appears “indefinite,” a term used by Israeli officials in a televised briefing. Bloomberg notes that regional markets have reacted cautiously, with oil futures edging higher as risk premiums rise.
