Alcohol Consumption During Pregnancy on the Rise, CDC Warns

New CDC data reveal that alcohol consumption during pregnancy is climbing, with ↑ 15.2% of surveyed expectant mothers admitting to drinking between 2021 and 2024, up from earlier years.

Among those who drink, ↑ 4.9% report binge episodes—four or more drinks at once—while 2.2% engage in heavy drinking, defined as eight or more drinks per week.

Who Is Most Affected?

Unmarried women and those experiencing frequent mental distress are disproportionately represented in the sample, suggesting that alcohol may be used as a coping mechanism.

“Alcohol consumption might alter stress pathways, amplifying the very distress it seeks to soothe,” the CDC report notes.

Experts caution that even low‑level exposure can lead to fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, affecting up to 5% of school‑age children nationwide.

Policy makers are urged to strengthen prenatal screening, expand warning labels, and consider tax measures to curb exposure, as highlighted by Reuters and AP News.
